Working Principle

The patented levitating bearing makes the mixer fully drainable and able to run dry. Alfa Laval Magnetic Mixer LeviMag UltraPure performance ranges from low shear mixing at around 10 rpm to high intensity mixing with vortex at up to 250 rpm. Depending on the mixer task, the range covers from 30 – 10,000 liters of nominal batch size.

Standard Design

The Alfa Laval Magnetic Mixer LeviMag UltraPure consists of a weld plate and a mixer unit, including gear drive. The weld plate is ordered and delivered separately to enable early preparation of the mixer installation. The mixer must be controlled by a variable frequency drive (VFD) unit matched perfectly with the mixer. The VFD is pre-programmed for optimum performance. Any brand of locally sourced VFD may be used under observation of the mixer manual.

How it works

The magnetic mixer transmits the required torque by means of magnetic coupling. The magnetic coupling consists of two sets of permanent magnets and a weld plate that separates the magnet sets. One set of magnets is mounted in the impeller and the other set in the rotor. When the rotor revolves by means of the gear drive, the interaction between the two sets of magnets creates a magnetic coupling, which strenghting the rotation of the impeller. To avoid loss of magnetic coupling, it is necessary to gradually ramp up the rotation by means of a frequency inverter. The typical ramp up time is approximately 30 seconds. The frequency inverter is also used to adjust the speed.

Since the magnetic field couples across an air gap and through the weld plate, the tank is not compromised and therefore does not require a seal. This eliminates the risk of leakage and product contamination.

The unique design of the Alfa Laval magnetic coupling ensures the levitation of the impeller at all times. This enables the complete drainability of process fluids and the free flow of CIP liquid and steam around all parts of the mixer, thereby ensuring thorough cleaning. Impeller levitation also eliminates axial wear.

The eight-winged impeller design ensures balanced operation at very low speeds and minimize wear of the bearings. Male bearings can easily be replaced with a bearing tool.
