Alfa Laval AXP AN stainless steel fusion bonded heat exchanger for extreme pressure and CO2 applicationsAlfa Laval AXP AN Fusion Bonded Heat Exchanger

Alfa Laval’s AXP AN heat exchanger stands for “extreme pressure” which highlights this AlfaNova heat exchangers capabilities. Specifically engineered for subcritical and transcritical applications with CO?, the 100% stainless steel design also enables possibilities for other high-pressure duties with high hygiene demands or aggressive media. The AXP AN (Extreme Pressure AlfaNova) is highly suitable for CO?/ammonia cascade systems or compressor cooling.

The Alfa Laval AXP AN Fusion Bonded Heat Exchanger line has a capacity range of 10–150 kW, with PED approval for maximum pressures of 110 bar at 150 °C and UL approval for 1595 psi at 302 °F. These units support heat recovery, gas cooling, condensing, sub-cooling, suction gas heating and more.

Alfa Laval AXP AN (Extreme Pressure, AlfaNova) Application

The AXP AN line is specially designed for R744/CO? refrigerant in subcritical and transcritical applications and high-pressure duties requiring 100% stainless steel.

Benefits

  • Compact design cuts installation costs by saving space.
  • High corrosion resistance.
  • Gasket-free fusion bonding reduces maintenance.
  • Low refrigerant volume.
  • Handles aggressive media and high temperatures.
  • Temperature range: –196 °C to 550 °C (–320.8 °F to 1,022 °F).

Applications

  • Ammonia – desuperheater, high-pressure condenser, oil cooler.
  • Compressor cooling.
  • CO? – subcritical condenser, suction gas heater, evaporator.
  • Engine cooling – high-pressure systems.

Material

Consists of corrugated stainless steel plates, frame plate and pressure plate. Plates are bonded using AlfaFusion technology (Alfa Laval patent).

Design

AlfaFusion filler seals and holds plates at contact points, ensuring optimal heat transfer and pressure resistance. External carbon steel frame withstands extreme pressures and includes lifting lug for handling.

Examples of connections

AXP AN connection examples

The brazed design holds the plate pack together at many contact points, providing excellent resistance to pressure fatigue and thermal shocks. All components are stainless steel for uniform thermal expansion.

Two media flow on either side of corrugated plates in counter-current channels, maximizing heat transfer even with small temperature differences.
